Acapulco Nights 4/5/14, Guest Larry Grogan

Studebaker Hawk breaks out the soul 45s and garage LPs for the first hour, to get you in the mood for our guest mix from Larry Grogan of Funky 16 Corners. Funky16Corners.com features stories of rare records in the spectrum of soul, funk, garage rock, etc. Each post provides one or more vinyl rips for download, straight from Larry's deep collection. He title's this mix "The Sound Of The Drum". It's heavy on percussion, and focusses on soul and rock as a precursor to disco. Fans of Loft era soul and disco take note.

Acapulco Nights 3/29/14, Studebaker Hawk's tribute to Funky 16 Corners, and Guest Just Joan

Studebaker Hawk presents his tribute to Funky 16 Corners for hour one. Funky16Corners.com features stories of rare records in the spectrum of soul, funk, garage rock, etc. Each post provides one or more vinyl rips for download, so this hour is entirely tracks downloaded from the site. Funky 16 Corners is curated by DJ, record digger, and all around soul man, Larry Grogan. Next week's show will feature a mix from Larry, along with a soul mix from Studebaker Hawk. For hour two, we have a guest mix from, friend of the show, Massachusetts DJ Just Joan. Joan is part of White Label DJs and resident at the Electric Cocktail Party. She calls this mix Backtrackin', excavated from her archives, when it was blended back in 2009.

Acapulco Nights 3/22/14, Alliance Upholstery 001 Release with Len Bias, and Guest mix from Markus Schneider

We are excited to celebrate the first release on Alliance Upholstery, a new label owned by, friend of the show, Len Bias. The release is a 12" single from the Japanese group Greeen Linez. The track is Hibiscus Pacific, and the 12" features the original mix as well as remixes by Sorcerer, Jacques Renault, and Moon B. Check out the tracks at Alliance Upholstery's Soundcloud. The record is available for sale in the US, direct from the label, at Studebaker Hawk's Discogs page, in Japan through Jet Set, in Europe through Rush Hour, and in many stores around the world. Check out the awesome music video. Len Bias mixes dubby disco and house for the first hour of the show.

For hour two, we have a guest mix from German DJ, Markus Schneider. He's co-owner of Emerald And Doreen Records, and part of the DJ collective The Robot Scientists. This mix jumps genres, though keeping an eye on the Nu-disco sound.

Acapulco Nights 2/22/14, Guest Mix and Interview with Pablo Yglesias

Excited to have Pablo Yglesias a.k.a. DJ Bongohead down to the station this week. Studebaker Hawk interviews Pablo about his upcoming exhibition Visual Clave: 50 Years of Latin Album Cover Design. The exhibition will run for a month at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in the Student Union Gallery, and features the many facets of Latin album covers, as well as original artwork in association with the theme. The opening party is Thursday February 27, and features DJs, Bongohead, Studebaker Hawk, and Andujar, among others, and a live performance by Jesús Pagán y Conjunto Barrio. Legendary designer Charlie Rosario will also be in the house, telling stories of how he created covers for classic Latin LPs by Eddie Palmieri, Charlie Palmieri, Larry Harlow, etc. In addition to many collections of Latin and African music, Pablo has released on Vampi Soul and the Rough Guides series, he put out the seminal book on Latin covers Cocinando!: Fifty Years of Latin Album Cover Art. Pablo is also a percussionist for the Afrobeat revival group Shokazoba. Throughout the interview, Pablo drops a lot of great latin records, so tune in for excellent music as well.
