Acapulco Nights 7/24/15, Tribute to Betty Davis

This week, we're sending a Happy 70th Birthday to Betty Davis. The American singer was influential in the creation of jazz fusion in the late 60s and recorded funk records of her own in the 70s. Studebaker Hawk plays his favorites from Davis' albums.

Acapulco Nights 7/10/15, Studebaker Hawk and guest John Clements

Acapulco Nights 7/3/15, guest Mike Moon with Studebaker Hawk

This week, DJ and record dealer Mike Moon came down to pass off records with Studebaker Hawk. He has tens of thousands of records for sale up at www.discogs.com/seller/musicowl. We go Loft style, and throw amazing songs, start to end, with no blends, though we do use a Vestax DDG 1 to mess with a couple exclusive unreleased mixes, sent over from legendary New York DJ, Victor Rosado. This is the only place you can hear these mixes, though we messed with them to discourage home taping.

Acapulco Nights 6/26/15, Studebaker Hawk

Two hours of jams from Studebaker Hawk this week. Hour one kicks off with a couple Happy Birthdays. A big Happy 40th to friend of the show Fongaboo! On the same day a big Birthday to fantastic disco and house producer Daniel Wang! I start off with one of my favorites from Mr. Wang, and keep things going with synth and italo. Hour two gets funkier, with afrobeat, funk, and funky rock.

Acapulco Nights 6/19/15, memorial tribute to Demis Roussos, and guest John Clements

This week, we remember the late Demis Roussos. He passed away on January 25 of this year, and this past Monday, would have been his 69th birthday. The Greek singer and musician, was a superstar around Greece and Europe and released more than 40 albums. He made his major mark on disco history, with his song L.O.V.E. Got A Hold On Me, which was a favorite at The Loft. Studebaker Hawk plays his favorites from Roussos' many albums.

Acapulco Nights 6/12/15, Studebaker Hawk and guests Selekta Sève and The Groove Thief

This week we have two guest mixes out from Hong Kong. Selekta Sève and The Groove Thief are residents at the party Pomegranate at Oma in Central, Hong Kong. They sent down mixes of ska and reggae. Studebaker Hawk kicks off hour 1 with a half hour of soulful and afro influenced disco. Selekta Sève takes over to close out the hour. Hour 2 is an hour from The Groove Thief. Tropical vibes from a different island.

Acapulco Nights 6/5/15, Memorial Tribute to Curtis Mayfield part 2

This week, I'm doing a second memorial tribute to the late Curtis Mayfield, in honor of what would have been his 73rd birthday. The American singer, guitarist, song writer, producer, record label owner, and activist, was one of the most influential artists in American funk and soul. In addition to his fame as a solo artist, and with his group The Impressions, he wrote and produced for many other artists, and ran the Curtom label. He was a major voice in the American civil rights movement, and penned theme songs to the black power movement. Studebaker Hawk plays some of his favorite songs Mayfield wrote and/or produced for others, and other artists covering his songs.
